Shelley Mayer Speaks Out

Shelley Mayer, Democratic and Working Families Party Candidate for New York State Assembly in the 93rd AD (Yonkers), issued the following statement, in support of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity and Alliance for Quality Education’s press conference calling for state legislation to ensure predictable and adequate funding of Yonkers Public Schools.

Mayer said, “I believe it is an elected official’s primary responsibility to provide the children of our communities with a sound basic education, at a minimum. The state has failed to provide the Yonkers schools with the stable and predictable flow of funds necessary to guarantee that our children receive a decent education. That’s the number one reason why I am seeking election to the State Assembly – to deliver for the families and students of Yonkers. For the eleven plus years that Mike Spano served in the State Assembly, the families of Yonkers faced constant threats of layoffs of teachers and staff, cutbacks in critical programs like art and music, and schools that were literally falling apart. Today’s closing of Yonkers Middle/High School is an indication of the urgent need for capital funding for our schools. When elected, I will fight for a fair and predictable funding stream for Yonkers schools in the State Assembly. Yonkers families don’t deserve the uncertainty that comes with knowing budget cuts may be just around the corner.”
