After nearly 10 1/2 hours of deliverations on Friday afternoon and evening and a quick deliberation session this morning, a jury returned a mixed verdict in the matter of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania vs. Thomas Moran Barrett.
Barrett, 29, was convicted on two counts of drug possession, one count of carrying a firearm without a permit, and one count of DUI. He was acquitted on the two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (which, in my opinion, was the weakest of the charges that were filed based on the testimony).
Barrett's family and friends appeared relieved over the verdict, in so far as the acquittal on the PWID charges. Had he been convicted on the PWID charges, he would've likely faced a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison since he was in possession of a firearm at the time of the incident. In any event, sentencing is expected to occur within 6 weeks.
